Teva grew up in an old neighborhood on a ridge in northwest Washington State, raised by a single mother. She had a happy but lonely childhood, seemingly never able to make consistent friends especially at her small school and in a neighborhood with no kids her age. As a result she was always seen as quiet and very mature.

Teva is also seemingly "gifted", having a unique sense for things that could be described as ghosts and spirits, but generally heightened intuition and frequent deja vu and such. (This is later connected to various conditions and disorders but this sense never quite matches up with what he is told, and he has his own explanations.)

Iris

A new family moves in next door when Teva is eight. They have a daughter her age named Iris, who Teva originally avoids because she thought they wouldn't get along. However they become very close friends and form a very special bond that neither of them could see at the time.

Teva didn't know very much about Iris or her family. She knew that something strange was going on, but didn't want to upset her by asking. Regardless Iris is at Teva's house quite a bit, and they spend a lot of time together. They have a lot of the same interests in anime, video games, etc... They also often explore the neighborhood backroads, where one day they come across an abandoned white house, empty but seemingly untouched. They become convinced that it is haunted. Teva can feel mysterious energy within the walls of the house but does not feel scared away.

High school is difficult for Iris and Teva and they begin to drift apart. While Iris seems to be more involved than ever, Teva has grown increasingly depressed and on top of everything is also having a very bad time gender-wise. He feels significantly disconnected from everybody else, and is now extremely nervous around Iris for reasons that suddenly become very clear to him. After she completely misses the point when he finally works up the courage to talk to her about it, he feels humiliated and very suddenly decides to drop out of school and move inland to work and live with his father.

Eastern Washington

Teva has a very bad time in Eastern Washington.
